RUGBYWA PIONEERS ‘ROAD TO RIO’ SEVENS CONCEPT

    EMIRATES WESTERN FORCE MEDIA ALERT
    Tuesday, 16 July 2013

RugbyWA will break new ground this week when it hosts the first Sevens development camp and introductory tournament.

The Road to Rio Sevens camp reflects the growing interest in Sevens rugby in Western Australia since the sport’s admission into the 2016 Olympic Games.

This week’s camp will see more than 60 players exposed to Sevens rugby through the two-day development camp at the Western Australian Rugby Centre, in Floreat on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 July.

The camp will equip players that are new to the seven-a-side game with specialist coaching from the RugbyWA Development team to build on their Sevens skill sets to accommodate the wider game play, quicker response time at the breakdown and smaller numbers at the set piece.

The camp will culminate in the Road to Rio Sevens tournament to Britannia Reserve, Leederville this Saturday, 20 July.

Nine teams in the under 13’s age group and six teams in the under 15’s age group will compete in the tournament. Fixtures are attached.

RugbyWA Manager Community Rugby Andrew Hill says the Road to Rio Sevens is a great opportunity for players with an interest in the seven-a-side game to showcase their skills.

“We’re piloting this program to introduce as many young players as possible to the sport of Sevens rugby,” he said.

“We’d love to see a player in the under 15’s be able to compete in the Olympic Sevens in three years’ time, likewise someone from under 13’s in 2020.

“We see Sevens as a fantastic introduction to rugby and are not only looking to raise the profile and participation of Sevens in the state but would love to see that have a flow on effect into the 15-a-side game.”

One issue is that 7's isn't an introduction to 15's. These days it's an entirely different sport to play, coach & referee, which has similar laws to the 15's game. Preparation is completely different and physical fitness needs to be much higher.

Good news good to see another avenue for people to take up the game of rugby be it the traditional XV man game or the VII man game.

Plenty of professional union players have made the move across from sevens. Give people more of a chance to develop skills and fitness
