Teenager banned for 15 years over bashing of linesman

A TEENAGE rugby player has been handed an astonishing 15-year ban for assaulting a linesman in a club match last weekend.

Daniel Mailata, 19, has been banned from the game until 2029 for punching the assistant referee a number of times at Daceyville last Saturday in front of spectators and fellow players.

Mailata, playing for Petersham Colts, launched his attack after the linesman over-ruled the referee’s original call of "no try" to Barker Old Boys in the semi-final.

The linesman advised the referee the Barker player had grounded the ball, which resulted in a last-minute try to Barkers that won the game and eliminated Petersham from the finals series.

Agree his actions are unacceptable, but 15 years is acceptable. We have all dine things at 17/18/19 that we regret later in life. I'm optimistic that his 34 year old self will regret the actions if his 19 year old self.

Punish hard yes, but lets not lose reality.
