Player sacked after turning up drunk

BRITISH and Irish Lions star Mike Phillips has been sacked by his French club Bayonne for reportedly turning up to a team meeting drunk.

The Welsh halfback, who was an integral part of the Lions' historic 2-1 series win over the Wallabies earlier this year, was apparently under the influence when he turned up for a video analysis session.

Phillips was told of the decision at the weekend but was expected to be given a formal termination letter on Monday.

Regarded as one of the best halfbacks in the world, Phillips has found off-field strife before. He was suspended by Bayonne last year for off-field misconduct, and in 2011 was also stood by Wales down for an altercation with a doorman in a Cardiff nightspot.

Phillips had already returned to Wales to start preparations for the coming internationals and is expected to start against Australia in their final match of the year on December 1 at Millennium
