    RugbyWA Grand Final Recap

    Mon, 12/09/2022, 1:28 pm
    Rugby WA Media

The 2022 RugbyWA season is done and dusted after a successful Grand Final weekend

Wests Scarborough are your 2022 Fortescue Premier Grade Champions!

A 45 - 37 win over the Minor Premiers UWA capped off an impressive eight-game winning streak, with Wests Scarborough completing the perfect run after the split.

Both sides played exciting passages of play in the thrilling final, which can only be described as a "Try Fest".

UWA's Caleb Young showed why he's one of the best kickers in the league, converting three penalties and field goals, but unfortunately wasn't enough. Wests Scarborough Liam Clews left with a couple of tries as his team secured the victory late in the game.

Wests Scarborough's coach Dan Whiston was humble in his team's victory.

"It was a tough game, and you have to give a lot of credit to UWA."

"They've been the benchmark, and we have been trying to chase them down all year."

"At stages, it wasn't champagne rugby, but that's ok. At the end of the day, we got the win."

In Division 2 of the FMG Premier Grade, Wanneroo faced off against the Minor Premiers Palmyra, who were undefeated after the split. Wanneroo took home the glory in a tight bout 35 - 31.

It was a battle of the kickers, with Palmyra's Rewita Biddle converting 5/5 kicks and getting a try of his own. However, Wanneroo's Jordan Grattan, stole the show capping off a fantastic game with 6/6 and a try.

Nedlands took home the Reserve Grade trophy with a 28 - 5 victory over Palmyra. Nedlands Hugo Welborn led the way ending the game with a couple of tries.

Nedlands Captain Dylan Loversidge was proud of his team's performance.

"Our squad have put in a lot of hard work over the season, we're really happy to come away with a result this year."

"We have a younger squad this year, it's great to see the younger boys getting amongst it."

Despite not beating them in the regular season, the Cottesloe Shegulls won the Alcohol Think Again Women's Final with a 13 - 12 over Kalamunda Kweens.

Two tries from Kalamunda's Trilleen Pomare wasn't enough, as the Sue Roberts Trophy Winner Kendra Fell's boot proved vital in Cottesloe's win.

After the match, Kendra had this to say.

"It was such a great fight and it was really good to get the win in the end."

It was a fantastic weekend out at Kingsway Sporting Complex.

Here are the winners from the weekend:

Really enjoyed the showcase of Perth Club rugby put on by RugbyWA and Wanneroo RUFC.

The final was an enjoyable, competitive game.

Wests were certainly the form club of the last rounds and Finals - especially after the last ditch win over Wanneroo to make the final 6 teams.

The under-age finals have been great to watch as well and Cottesloe's win over Kala in the womens' final a surprise.

I hope that we can continue to see improvement in local Club rugby after the severe impact of 2017.
