Australian Schools Under 18's Squad 2022

Three WA players, Caleb Karangaroa from Wanneroo, Ryan McGloin of Joondalup and Kalamunda’s Dane Sawers, have been named in the Australian Schools/under-18 squad.

Can't find any story yet but congratulations to these young fellas, for those of you that used to meet at the bowlo in the early years of games at Subi Oval, Caleb was one of those little kids with big dreams running about the place hoping one day he would be playing for the Force and believe me, he is not so little anymore.

    Good luck to you all

Not strictly for this thread but I see Sunday morning on Stan, at 7.55am: National Championships U16s Brumbies v Force, followed at 9.30am by the U19s for each team. After that Reds v Tahs 16s and 19s, if anyone cares.

Wednesday morning next week starting at 8.55am are Rabble v Force 16s followed by 19s at 10.30am.

Force Under 16 beat Brumbies u 16 on the weekend (8/10/2022) and four players selected into the team of the week:

Force U16 looks very well balanced and played well.

U 16 team of the Week

    Daniel Christodoulou (NSW Waratahs)
    Ewald Kruger (Queensland Reds)
    Princeton Ioane (Queensland Reds)
    Zion Poitaha (NSW Waratahs)
    Manaia Te Tana (Western Force)
    Ollie Aboud (NSW Waratahs)
    Luke Holt-Brown (Western Force)
    Harry Harrington (ACT Brumbies)
    Sam Blank (NSW Waratahs)
    Brodie Mainwaring (Western Force)
    Charlie Poynton (NSW Waratahs)
    Joe Walsh (NSW Waratahs)
    Chase Oates (Queensland Reds)
    Ken Ah Hong (Western Force)
    Mitchell Woods (NSW Waratahs)

Strong forward pack, backline did not gel with forwards and there appears to be a gap between the two giving a very unbalanced feel to the team. After a good first half where they should have added at least another couple of tries to their score, the U18 fell away and got belted in the end by the Brumbies U18, however two players still made the team of the week:

    Harrison Usher (Queensland Reds)
    Marley Pearce (Western Force)
    Nick Bloomfield (Queensland Reds)
    Oskar Hicks (NSW Waratahs)
    Ruben Steenkamp (Western Force)
    Clem Halaholo (NSW Waratahs)
    Chris Mickelson (ACT Brumbies)
    John Bryant (Queensland Reds)
    Ben Keogh (ACT Brumbies)
    Harry McLaughlin-Philips (Queensland Reds)
    Henry Palmer (ACT Brumbies)
    Charlie Worthington (NSW Waratahs)
    Matius Jensen (ACT Brumbies)
    Jackson Connelly (Queensland Reds)
    Tom Morrison (NSW Waratahs)

For me Holt Brown and Pearce where the standouts and probaby our MOM in each team

Force U16 and U19 both went down in close encounters to the Rebels in Melbourne yesterday.

The conditions were appalling, wind gusts up to 40 km and incessant rain.

    U16

    Rebels 19 v Force 17

The U16 were unlucky as they gave away two intercept tries and a penalty try.

Again Luke Holt Brown good, liked the look of Hugh Chapman others as well as Rebels struggled in the autrocious weather conditions.

    U 18

    Rebels 14 Force 10

All points scored with the wind.

U19 better than on the weekend but still forwards look far better than the backline.

Marley Pearce again standout, also felt Rueben Steenkamp, Ned Slack Smith and James Pese had good games.

Looking forward to seeing both teams get home and play in better weather conditions. Sunday 30 Oct and 6 Nov, if coming to watch be aware of the ridicously early starting time.

I have just heard that Caleb's boyhood dream of playing for the Force is coming to fruition with him being offered an Academy spot at the Force for next year. Fantastic to see the pathways working and building up our home grown talent

Have to say, after watching the U16s, for me the Force boys dominated in every area on the field - Rebels went backwards in scrums, lost lineouts, dropped balls, out tackled, turnovers. The Rebs had 1 trick - the rolling maul when they finally got it to work in a rather dubious penalty try. Without that try & another lucky intercept they were essentially outplayed. Some really good talent coming through with these kids which is great to see. Just annoying to see a silly loss.

However silly losses and brain farts are part of age grade rugby. I wouldn't be too hard on the boys for that. If they outplayed and suffered an unlucky defeat then focus on the positives and as they mature the professionalism will kick in.

I haven't had time to catch up with all the ancillary rugby that's going around at the moment, barely had time to watch Aus A Wallaroos and Wallabies, but I think I might need to put this one on my watch list.

    Weekend Review from rugby.com.au:

    WESTERN FORCE v QUEENSLAND REDS

    U16s

The Western Force have held on to defeat the Queensland Reds 17-15 as they charge into finals contention.

The hosts’ easy dominance was rewarded in the eighth minute as Ken Ah Hong dived over in the corner.

Ah Hong added his second just before the break to put the Force up 12-0 at the break as the Reds struggled to build consistent pressure.

Devan Button extended the lead after the break after some great interchange between the backline.

The Reds’ dominant scrum started to gain ascendancy as fullback Chase Oates put James Duggan over to kickstart their comeback.

This was followed by Prestyn Laine-Sietu crashing over minutes later to get the Reds back into the contest.

However, they struggled with their goal-kicking as they failed to convert both chances, allowing the Force to take a converted try lead into the final minutes.

With time running out, an errand line out throw with four minutes to go gave the visitors one final chance to strike, with the relenting pressure leading to Ngadang Kunai committing a professional foul and earning a yellow card.

As time expired, Tom Howard cruised over the line untouched to give Oates a chance to tie the match, however, his kick from 5 metres out from the sideline faded to the left as the Force held on.

    U19s

The Queensland Reds have dominated the Western Force 36-7 to comment their spot in the top two.

A great charge from John Bryant set the tempo early inside the first ten minutes, running 50 metres as he was dragged down short, setting up Stuart Tualima to finish the expansive play to open the scoring.

Reds lock Lachlan Shaw was yellow carded shortly afterwards for a dangerous cleanout, however, it failed to stop their momentum as Taj Annan’s great offload found fullback Harry Grant.

Annan then set up his second try with Shaw still in the bin, finding flanker Nicholas Baker to extend the lead.

An error just before the break allowed the Reds to dive over via Willem Johnstone to take a 26-0 lead into the break.

Harry McLaughlin-Philips continued his great year, stepping through the defence to extend the advantage.

The day went from bad to worse for the Force as Thomas Crofts for a professional foul, opening the foot for Grant to score a second before somehow dropping the ball just before the line.

The Force defied the numbers disadvantage as Kauri Tipene-Grace dived over close to the posts.

In the end, the visitors were too strong as a show and go from Harrison Usher sealed the win.
