Force coach Simon Cron has been hit with a ‘please explain’ from Super Rugby officials after questioning the integrity of referees and match officials, as Marika Koroibete was revealed the winner of the 2022 John Eales Medal.

Two days after his side produced only the second Australian win over New Zealand opposition this season, Cron was slapped with a breach notice for comments he made after his side’s loss a week earlier.

This sounds a lot like "here, we gifted you a win, why did you make us look like idiots when we clearly acted like idiots"

The "please explain" should be very simple for him!

He should just ask them where in his comments he was factually incorrect, and then ask them to explain how 5 officials managed to miss an incident less than a minute into the game that was caught on multiple camera angles, led directly to a player having to leave the field for an HIA, and which saw the perpetrator receive a suspension that was deemed to be at the HIGH end of the scale for the offence.

While they were at it did the Super Rugby Officials provide a please explain of how 2 TMO officials and 9 cameras missed it? How the Force had to raise it?

Either that, or maybe they literally need him to explain the offence to them, as all of the professional officials were too blind to see if for themselves at the time?

I am more concerned that RA has leaked the info to GR. Or perhaps she just made it up.

GR has long been a handy mouthpiece for any stories RA wanted in the papers. There are times when she's more the RA press officer than a journalist!

    Here's the rest of it

Force coach Simon Cron has been hit with a ‘please explain’ from Super Rugby officials after questioning the integrity of referees and match officials, as Marika Koroibete was revealed the winner of the 2022 John Eales Medal.

Two days after his side produced only the second Australian win over New Zealand opposition this season, Cron was slapped with a breach notice for comments he made after his side’s loss a week earlier.

The Shute Shield-winning former Norths coach had until close of business on Monday to respond to the SANZAAR notice and could face anything from a written warning to a fine or suspension under competition rules.

Cron was furious that the television match official missed Lachie Swinton’s dangerous tackle on Force five-eighth Jake Strachan in the opening minute of the match. The team was forced to bring the incident to the attention of the citing commissioner, with Swinton slapped with a 10-week ban reduced to seven.

“We saw it live, everyone I’ve talked to saw it live ... and yet two guys in the (TMO) box with nine cameras missed it,” Cron told reporters last Thursday.

“So you’ve got to ask the question - did they miss it, or did they choose to miss it?

“Because I don’t understand how you could miss it.”

No player, coach or official is allowed to publish criticism of a match official’s handling of a game, or the competition’s handling of a decision.

The television match official in question, David Conway, was absent from the round nine roster of referees and officials last weekend.

It came after Force boss Tony Lewis put in writing to Rugby Australia and SANZAAR his concerns that the team was not being given a fair go in Super Rugby Pacific.

Lewis told this masthead he received a response promising an “educational review to prevent it happening again in a future match”.

Seems odd that he would need to explain. If two TMOs and all the on-field refs just completely missed it, they need to work out how when it is one of the major aspects of the TMO role (and arguably exactly why there is now a second one).

If instead they did see it, then Cron is absolutely right in asking how they so completely mis-read what was actually foul play at the high end of the scale. Did they see it and choose not to review it at all? Or did review it and choose to do nothing as they didn't think there was anything in it? Did they choose not to follow it up because they were loath to stop the game and affect the recent obsession with time in play?

Whatever the reason, if they didn't see it then asking how is justified. If they did see it, they chose to take no action and the question both how and why they chose to ignore it is valid. That sort of hit is exactly why there are now CTE court cases and WR directives on head contact, so whatever the mechanism by which they concluded it wasn't a thing, absolutely needs to be questioned and revisited.

As an aside, that everyone immediately jumps to the conclusion that he was questioning the refs integrity probably says more than anything what they all think the reason might be. If your first thought when the wife asks where the hell her purse has gone is that she's accusing your kid of stealing it, then that is probably more about what you think of your kid.

Exactly. If the description of what can't be said as per the SMH piece is accurate then Cron will be sanctioned somehow. BUT - I cant see how both Tony Lewis and Simon Cron would be oblivious to the implied breadth of this description. So for both of them to criticise publicly, they must have reached the point where taking the calculated risk seemed worthwhile. Someone in authority needed to do just that.

But if so, the conclusion would have to be that he will be getting sanctioned for saying what they all themselves are thinking.

Or to conceal their part in getting the refs priorities so far out of whack that they couldn't/wouldn't see that hit for what it was.

I remember posting somewhere when Tony Lewis made his statement (I think on SportFM) which was IMHO a stronger statement than Cronny, that he'd probably looked over the accounts and set aside the money to pay the fine before he opened his mouth.

Perhaps the same was in place.

Regardless of the cost, the spray did have some impact, with Nic Berry being hyper touchy on the carding issue this week. Not sure it was the desired outcome, but somebody listened.
