Kellaway, Leota start as Wallabies name side to face Wales

Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has named his side to face Wales, with Andrew Kellaway set to start at fullback.

Kellaway will feature in his first World Cup game at the back, shifting Ben Donaldson to flyhalf.

The move will see Carter Gordon revert to the bench with Tate McDermott to partner Donaldson in the halves, returning from a concussion.

McDermott will serve as vice-captain of the side, with Dave Porecki retaining the captaincy in an unchanged tight five.

Jones has made one change to the forward pack, with Rob Leota thrust into the back-row.

Leota will start at blindside flanker, with Tom Hooper moving to openside flanker.

Pone Fa'amausili returns from injury on the bench, joined by Matt Faessler and Blake Schoupp.

He is joined by Fraser McReight, with Nic White, Gordon and Suliasi Vunivalu the back replacements.

“Every team has matches like this during a Rugby World Cup and for this young team it is this week," Jones said.

“We’ve prepared well, are focused on what we need to do, and we’ll be ready to fight on Sunday night.”

Wales name side for third round RWC clash with Australia

Senior men’s head coach Warren Gatland has named his Wales XV to play Australia at OL Stadium, Lyon in their third pool C match of Rugby World Cup 2023 (Sunday 24 September KO 8pm BST / 9pm local time live on ITV and S4C).

Wales will travel to Lyon this evening (Friday) from their team base in Versailles.

Adam Beard is named in the second row to win his 50th cap for Wales. Will Rowlands starts alongside him.

Jac Morgan captains the side and starts his third match of the tournament after coming in as a late injury replacement for Tommy Reffell against Portugal last weekend. Taulupe Faletau at No. 8 and Louis Rees-Zammit on the wing are the other two players to start in all of Wales’ pool matches so far.

Aaron Wainwright returns at blindside flanker to complete the back row.

Josh Adams at wing and Liam Williams at full-back join Rees-Zammit in the Wales back three.

Nick Tompkins and George North continue their centre partnership. Gareth Davies is named at scrum-half with Dan Biggar returning at fly-half.

In the front row, Ryan Elias is named at hooker for his tenth RWC appearance across two tournaments. Gareth Thomas starts at loosehead prop and Tomas Francis is at tighthead prop.

Wales’ replacements include Tomos Williams, Gareth Anscombe and Rio Dyer as the back line cover.

Elliot Dee, Corey Domachowski and Henry Thomas, who is in line to make his RWC debut from the Wales bench, are the front row cover. Dafydd Jenkins is the second row cover and Taine Basham is the final forward replacement for the second match running.

Gatland said: “We’re happy with our position going into this game. We have two wins and ten points. There’s a confidence among this group and we’ve had a good edge to training this week.

“Everyone wants to be involved and there were some disappointed players this week, which is exactly what we want with competition strong across the squad.

“Every game in the World Cup is tough, the stakes are high, and this will be no different. Australia have talented players and we know they will want to come out and put in a performance this weekend.

“Our accuracy was good against Fiji, but it was not at the level we would like against Portugal. We are looking to get better every week. Against Australia we know we have to take our chances and put them under as much pressure as possible.

“If we play the way we know we can and maintain that for 80 minutes, then we know we will be a very hard team to beat.”

That is what is so effing annoying. We routinely outperform Fiji and Wales at U20 level. It isn't exactly grassroots that's the problem. It's coaching and number of games (I.e. NRC).

Want cohesion? Here's a hot tip- don't replace your head coach less than 12 months out. Don't cut a third of the regulars and play new combinations with a new playing style and some players who didn't earn the right to be there- Uelese, Vunivalu, Richie Arnold. We need to get past some of our hang ups. The Boks Ireland game was riveting. You don't need to score off every play. The Wallabies need to wake up to the realities of test match rugby.

Several points I noticed in the post game diatribe was Hoiles crapping on about the injustices done to previous coaches eg Ewen McKenzie with Hooper standing beside him looking a tad nervous. And also Hooper talking about going for lineout instead of taking the 3! If they want to rant about the dysfunction of RA you could just point at one of the prime contributors to the problems right there. Personally I’m glad they’ve finally crashed and burned if only to get the global embarrassment have RA dismantled.

McLennan has completely shit the bed in the sacking of Rennie, hiring of Jones and letting Jones pick this World Cup squad but I don't think he deserves abuse at dinner.

Let the sponsors abuse him when they pull up stumps because Rugby Australia is a basket case.
