Eddie Jones 'is set to QUIT the Wallabies'

Eddie Jones's short-lived second stint in charge of the Wallabies is reportedly all but over after Rugby Australia axed a handful of his trusted allies.

A number of Wallabies staff have been let go by Rugby Australia following the team's disastrous World Cup campaign, including highly-respected team manager Chris Webb.

Most of the staff were only contracted until the end of the tournament, but News Corp reports that many were brought in by Jones upon his arrival earlier this year, including team psychologists, indicating that the tide is turning against him.

The report also states that Jones has his own escape route by way of exit clauses included in his $4.5million contract, which allow him to break his deal if Rugby Australia fails to secure private investment funding or provide a centralised model. Both objectives have not been achieved yet.

The staff exodus was part of a Rugby Australia 'cleanout' but signals a lack of faith in the esteemed coach, who reportedly interviewed for the head coach role with Japan before the tournament.

Jones denies the rumours but reports in Japan have claimed he is close to rejoining the Brave Blossoms after his successful spell in Asia in 2015.

News Corp adds that Webb's departure has 'disappointed' Jones, while assistant coaches Jason Ryles, Brett Hodgson, Dan Palmer, Neil Hatley, Pierre-Henry Broncan and Berrick Barnes have also been shown the door.

Should Jones decide to trigger an exit clause, it would save Rugby Australia from a full-term payout of his contract, which runs until 2027.

He insisted last week that he is fully committed to the Wallabies job.

'I loved seeing some of the young players maturing during the World Cup - and some struggled, and that is part of it,' Jones said.

'Most of them showed ... they have enough to really go forward and be very good players for Australia.

'We throw in a few other players from around the place and we have a nucleus of a really good team.'

After fiercely defending his youth policy despite the Wallabies only registering unconvincing wins over minnows Portugal and Georgia in nine Tests this year, Jones fessed up to one regret in 2023.

'The only thing I regret is probably telling the press to give themselves an uppercut,' he said of his infamous pre-World Cup press conference at Sydney airport.

'But sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that you regret.

'I probably need to give myself an uppercut, don't I? I did not like the way that media conference was portrayed, but it was probably not the wisest thing.'

Eddie’s Jones controversial second stint as Wallabies coach is over.

Less than one month after Australia’s dismal World Cup campaign ended – the Wallabies were knocked out in the group stages for the first time in history – Jones and Rugby Australia are set to part ways.

It comes after the Herald’s revelation last month that Jones had a secret interview with Japan rugby officials about taking over as the country’s head coach in 2024. Jones denies he has taken part or will sit in an interview with the JRFU.

The Herald reported on Friday that Jones informed RA he was open to walking away from the Wallabies job, less than one year into a five-year contract.

The Wallabies won two of nine Tests under Jones this year.

Sources with knowledge of the situation, who requested anonymity to speak freely, said Jones and RA had reached an agreement.

RA declined to comment on the issue earlier on Sunday. Chairman Hamish McLennan was contacted for comment.

Jones spoke to this masthead’s Peter FitzSimons about his resignation and said his overriding emotion was “disappointment”.

    season
“[I] gave it a run. Hopefully be the catalyst for change. Sometimes you have to eat shit for others to eat caviar further down the track,” Jones said.

Both parties have been locked in discussions over recent days about an exit for the under fire coach.

There is final paperwork to be signed but Jones’ future as Wallabies boss is over.

The news is a major embarrassment for RA, who signed Jones on a five-year deal in January after sacking Dave Rennie following a run of inconsistent performances.

Do we need a "Can RA please stop making fuck ups" thread? I didn't think it was possible for this mon to be a bigger clusterf#ck than Clyne & Co. In any normal enterprise they'd all be walking the plank. Welcome to the laughing stock dept.

I seriously hope Dave Rennie is sitting somewhere having a chuckle about this shitshow.

Surely a couple of the board have to follow Jones out the door?

Hopefully not very, the Force need the continuity.

As much as who's best for the role is who is available.
Recall quite a few of the RWC Coaches being at the end of contract, however, and especially with Cheika, that doesn't mean they aren't getting renewed.

One model I could get behind would be Steve Hansen as Director of Rugby and Ronan O'Gara as Head Coach.
No political ties or historical baggage, a clean sheet.
Start developing their successors from Australian SR Coaches.

Coaching the All Blacks make you look good.
You don't make the All Blacks look good.
    They already are...

I suspect Jones is tired, he and his wallet are just going to drink craft beer on a beach some where. The last year has been super tough for him.

With the greatest of respect mate. History has shown that Australian teams don't seem to work or react well with "foreign" coaches.

A fortnight on, Jones told The Australian he had amicably agreed to the terms of his departure and that there would be no payout.

Is Dave Rennie still under contract?

The contract might have expired at the date of the RWC final (optimistically) but I could see a world where the contract extends a couple of weeks past the finish of RWC to ensure he's available for reviews and press commitments. Rennie might still be under contract and on "gardening leave" and Eddie's contract has terminated.
