Terrass Hotel, if memory serves me correctly, in Montmatre. Stayed a couple of times years back and it's not bad. In Paris don't go below 4 star as you can be shocked by the standard of some of the lower end market hotels in my experience. Although I'm talking about a few years ago now.

I have a couple of travel guides if you want to borrow them....they are from last visit so post new millenium.

Looks like you may need to increase the limit on the visa mate. Not sure if it still is but Paris was the most expensive town in Europe for a long time. I got stung 24 pounds stirling for two beers and two ham sangers about 10 years ago. Although i did learn that you don't eat in the tourist spots!!!!!

I've always stayed 2* in Paris (except once 4* which was of course very nice) - and I must have just been lucky because they've always been OK.

You're right about avoiding the tourist spots though, and if you do that it really isn't any more expensive than anywhere else.
Good tip: find a square or street with lots of busy restaurants, and then have a nosy down the smaller streets in the area. You'll often find good cheaper places this way. Same thing applies to drinks - smart bar on the corner will charge significantly more for the same beer than the one just down the street.
And in both these cases it may have more character and better service!
