TWF Tri-Nations Tipping Competition

This comp will be a combined paid ($10 entry, 100% funds split among top 3 paid tippers in a 60/30/10 ratio) and free competition open to all TWF members with possible prizes being awarded to the top 3 placed #active members. Non active members get bragging rights only.

#Active members who are in the paid competition will be able to win prizes and cash.

I reserve the right to change these competition rules/conditions.

Any disputes will be resolved by majority vote between the 2 moderators (Burgs and Travelling Gerry).

Tipping Rules:
Correctly Tipped Win = 20 Points
Correctly Tipped Draw = 30 Points
Margin Bonus = 1 point per Margin tipped with in 10 points of actual margin, maximum of 10 bonus points for correctly tipped margin.
Non Submission of Tips = 0 Points
Joining Competition Late = 0 Points per missed Game

The idea of such rules is a pain - but I hope you understand what I'm trying to do - or am I just way off track and worried over nothing? I just don;t think it's fair that some ring in or possible pro-tipper come breezing in and taking prizes donated by TWF community members for TWF community members...

To be eligible to win in the paid comp, you only have to pay, or organise payment before kick off!

The rules are up before the first round.
If anyone doesn't like the rules, they don't have to get involved in the competition.

Check teh first post in this thread as to your 'status' in the paid tipping comp. Thos with a * next to their name have given me cash, those with a ^ have organised it and are in the comp, those with no characters next to their name will not be in the paid portion of the comp till they organise something. Everyone else is still welcome to join in up till the first match!

Perhaps a prize for finishing dead last. I'm in a footy tipping comp at work and the last place finisher gets $20 back on $22 investment. After I did so poorly the first five weeks I decided to try and finish last and at least get some money out of it. There's 70 people in it and I'm in 68th spot right now. However, this past week with all the upsets I ended up with 6 out of 8 and won the weekly prize of $45.

This always amazes me because if you can pick the loser right you have also got the winner right, right. Why go for last place when be choosing the winner instead of the loser you win more

I do agree that it does seem a bit strange, but you'd be surprised at the results. I think the main reason is that you tend not to overthink. If you are just trying to pick the loser you usually end up just picking the underdog. If you are trying to actually win you might talk yourself into picking an upset or two and when they don't work out you end up with 2 or 3 for the week and it kills you on the leaderboard. Other thing to consider is when picking normally you are more likely to pick your own team even if they are slight underdogs. But under my system if I pick against the Crows its cause I think they will win, but if I pick the Crows its cause I like to pick the Crows

My experience is that by picking normally (and being conservative) you can usually average about 5 or 6 a week over the year, which in a comp of 70 would put you in the top 20 (but you only get money for top 3). If you pick normally but pick one or two upsets each week, you'll probably average 4 or 5 and finish in the top 50, you may win a week if your upsets come through. And doing it my way, I average 2 or 3, pretty much guaranteed to finish in the bottom 5 (so have a good shot at the 20) and when there is a week with a bunch of upsets I am most likely to win it.

Another system I like is just picking the home teams every week with the exception of the top two teams on the ladder, you pick them regardless.

I suggest that everyone put tips in for the whole comp, and then change them as they see fit...
