    WHAT IS WOBBER?

Can someone please tell me where the nickname 'WOBBER' comes from. When I played with John Welborn (and yes, I taught him everything), he was Johnny Wadd. He became the 'POWDER KEG' in Sydney (Tim Gavin swears John gave the nickname to himself). So who or what called him Wobber? Was it a Chinese fan who was impressed by John's ability to steal ball at two? (That's for the intellectuals.)

You and my dad both apparently mick.

I'll ask dad when he gets home to see if he has any idea. Though if he didn't have the nickname when you all played together he might not know either...

Gordon Bray called "The Mayor" a "Powder Keg" during commentary of the Super 12 in 1996. JPW may have run with that and tried to make it stick but it was Gordon who first coined the nickname.

"Wobber" comes from his time at Scotch. You'll have to ask a Scotch boy how it started.

His nickname in France was apparently "Le Quatre" or "Maitre".

    In South Africa "Buckets"

    At Leicester tigers "Stillers"

Others: "Punish", "The hand", "the conch", "Johnny Wad", "Jack", "Japes", "Yeti", "

    Oh and don't forget "John-Paul"

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.

I've hammered the old rolodex and have been informed of the origins of "Wobber".

It was bestowed upon the Mayor in high school.... I should preface this with the fact that the informant wishes to remain anonymous as "he is a scary big rucker now" however - it may have had something to do with "a large amount of puppy fat, large ears and big floppy lips"

    You heard it here first

Now - who is going to confirm this with Wobber tomorrow night?
