    From Canberra Times:

Super struggler now a real Force Brumbies wary of big improver
    Julia Whyte
    Friday, 15 September 2006

The Western Force might have been considered a Super 14 struggler, even the season's easybeat, earlier this year, but the ACT Brumbies will not underestimate it at Viking Park tonight .
Coming last in the Super 14 competition had at least one advantage for the Force. Few of its players were selected in the national squad, leaving most of the side available for the inaugural Australian Provincial Championships.

While the ACT team boasts some of its regular starters, it is for the most part a side made up of the next generation of Brumbies and a handful of club players.

Captain Alister Campbell said the side, which had trained together full-time for about two weeks, had come together well last week to beat the NSW Waratahs but would have to put in an improved performance to steal top spot on the competition ladder from the West Australians.

"[The Force] have had a great preparation, they've basically been preparing for this competition since the end of Super 14," he said yesterday.

"All their players weren't able to come back to the eastern seaboard for club competitions, so they're a pretty sharp outfit and they've got limited amount of guys in the Test squad so they've got a fair bit of experience on deck.

"They play a pretty wide expansive game so we'll have to have a big improvement from last week to compete with them ... the feeling's good after a win last week and we're looking to carry that momentum and confidence into the game."

It will be the first time the Western Force has travelled to the ACT and while it may be missing some of its marquee players such as Nathan Sharpe and the recently recruited Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell, there is still plenty for rugby fans to look forward to. Wallabies veteran Brendan Cannon will take to the field for just the second time since neck surgery sidelined him in April.

The match also marks the return of scrumhalf and former St Edmund's College student Matt Henjak to Canberra for the first time since leaving the Brumbies to join the Force.

He will line up in what should be an exciting battle against Patrick Phibbs, who had one of his best games of the season last week when he helped the Brumbies to a one-point win against the Waratahs.

The weather conditions tonight are expected to be much-improved on the drizzle at last week's match against NSW and should suit the Brumbies' traditional running style of rugby.

Brumbies coach Matt O'Connor has shuffled the backline to bring Julian Huxley into flyhalf with Gene Fairbanks and Adam Ashley-Cooper teaming up in the centres to allow the side to play a more expansive game.

If the Brumbies follow their game plan and send the ball out wide it will set up one of the best head-to-heads of the game - Force winger Digby Ioane versus Brumbies flyer Francis Fainifo.

Ioane, 21, made an immediate impact in his debut Super 14 season this year with the Force, which came on the back of touring with the Wallabies to Europe in late 2005.

He is still waiting to earn his first Test cap and will be hoping to impress national selectors tonight, but comes up against one of the Brumbies most promising outside backs in Fainifo.

The 22-year-old joined the Brumbies program this year from NRL club the West Tigers and made a name for himself during the ACT club competition by carving up opposition defence for premiership winners the Tuggeranong Vikings.

Fainifo did not see much of the ball during the Brumbies outing against NSW but is sure to show off some of his trademark speed at Viking Park tonight.

    ACT Brumbies V Western Force

7pm at Viking Park. Gates open at 5.30pm.

Digby (provided he is fit) up against Frankie will be very exciting indeed, Frankie has only been in ACT a little while but he has made a name for himself very quickly and he is fast as will Phibbs v Henners and it is a perfect spring day here, so no rain this week, yay!
And my phone is on the charger all ready to keep you posted.
