    Western Australian Wallabies

Thanks to no.8 for the info below, I thought it deserved its own thread!
If anyone has further info on the players listed below (ie dead or alive, current location, Test details etc etc) please add it to the thread. We can perhaps form our own TWF Hall of Fame!
The tenious link of a few listed below perhaps allows us to include all current Force Wallabies?
Let's hope it's not too long before we get another Western Australian born player to a cap, Brett Sheehan and Adam Wallace-Harrison will probably fight to be the next.
    Any other contenders to mention?

    no.8:
The list of Wallaby reps from WA is short - 11 in total.

Of course there's Western Force recruit John Welborn.

John Steggall was born in Geraldton in 1909, he played for Australia on 10 occasions.
He lived in Brisbane when he had the call up. He played for YMCA and Qld.

Mick Mathers was born in Perth he played 2 test for Australia, although he was playing for Eastwoods when selected.

NZ born Bob Thompson was picked for Australia whilst playing for Wests in 1971.

Other guys we claim are Max Carpenter who played for Perth in 1934 before moving back to Sydney 1938, then gaining Wallaby honours.

Queenslander Spencer Brown in the 50's played in Perth before moving onto Manly and gaining 3 caps at 32yo against SA.

Londoner Art Turnbull played for UWA in the mid 50's, after to moving Victoria in 1961 he gain one cap against Fiji in a 3-3 draw.

Scot Ken McCurrach played for both Perth and Uni 1969-72, he moved to Sydney and was picked for '73 Wallabies European tour and played for Australia against Italy in a non-test match.

Alan Morton played 11 tests for the Wallabies 1957-59, then came to WA played for Uni and WA.

Norm Storey played once for Australia in 1962 against the All Blacks. He finished his career with Associate and Melbourne and South Australia.

Ian Mackay did play but there is no records of his career.

Finally sydneysider Keith Besomo played for the Wallabies once in 1979 against Ireland.
Although he did tour 3 times! He played out his seasons with Soaks and WA/Tasmanian. Believe it or not he had been deaf since birth!

And now proud Sandgroppers, we are on the eve of another Western Son becoming one the elite in the code from this State.
Geraldton born and bred Brett Sheehan is set to come off the bench in Auckland tomorrow to become the 12th Western Wallaby!
From all on TWF and around the Western Australian Rugby Community Brett, congratulations, go well and here's to many more Caps ahead......and feel free to return home BEFORE you retire!

    ARU Profile:

    Brett Sheehan
    Position Scrum half
    Height 173cm
    Weight 90kg
    Date of Birth 16/8/1979
    Club Warringah, NSW
    Super 14 Team Queensland Reds - 2005, NSW Waratahs - 2006
    Super 12/14 Caps 16
    Test Points -
    Test Caps -
    Test Debut -
Honours Brisbane Broncos, Northern Eagles and South Sydney NRL, Australia A 2005 and 2006

Brett Sheehan has played a key role as a back up scrumhalf to Waratahs captain Chris Whitaker this season, often coming on around the 60 minute mark to increase the physical presence and lift the tempo.

An Australia A representative in 2005 and 2006, Sheehan's four years in the National Rugby League and strong Rugby background as a schoolboy, has seen him gain from every experience in both Super Rugby and the international game over the last two seasons.

1997-1998 - Was a member of the St Joseph's College First XV where he broke his leg in the second last match of the 1998 season, missing out on any schoolboy representative honours.

1999-2003 - Signed with National Rugby League club the Brisbane Broncos straight out of school, where he played two seasons before shifting to the Northern Eagles and finally South Sydney, where he featured in 10 first grade matches.

2004 - Returned to club Rugby playing for Warringah before being offered a NSW Waratahs Academy Scholarship.

2005 - An Academy contract holder with the Waratahs, he signed with the Queensland Reds midway through the Super 12 season to cover for the injured Josh Valentine and made his debut against the Bulls. He played a total of four matches before being named in the Australia A team to play the Junior All Blacks in Canberra and Sydney. Brett was also a member of the Australia A team who defeated in the French Barbarians in Bordeaux and was also a member of the Waratahs touring party to Eastern Europe.

2006 - He has become a regular member of the Waratahs match day 22, replacing scrumhalf and captain Chris Whitaker on 12 occasions. He was a member of the Australia A team who defeated Fiji 80 - 9 in Melbourne.

    From Waratahs Profile:

Brett Sheehan is a tough, no-nonsense scrumhalf who comes to the Waratahs with a wealth of experience across both Rugby codes.

Having achieved NSW Waratah Academy selection at the start of 2005, Sheehan was picked up by the injury-ravaged Queensland Reds on a training contract midway through the Super 12 season. After featuring in four Super 12 matches over the course of the second half of 2005, Sheehan chose to return home to NSW to take up a two year deal with the Waratahs.

His no backward steps style has seen him win three Australia A caps, a statistic he’s expected to extend upon and better in coming seasons.

A member of the St Joseph's College first XV in 1997 & 1998, Sheehan was unlucky to miss out on higher representative honours after breaking his leg in the second last game of the '98 season.

Straight out of school he signed with NRL powerhouse the Brisbane Broncos, where he played two seasons. He then shifted to the Northern Eagles and finally South Sydney, where he featured in 10 first grade matches.

He wasn't good enough to play for Scotland so made do with playing for Australia to get international honours.
