It is widely assumed that White's background as Springboks coach will help him to recruit a marquee import.
An informed source has told The Weekend Australian that Pienaar's name has been mentioned in discussions.
There is a feeling in Canberra that the Brumbies never adequately replaced former Australia captain and halfback George Gregan, who retired from Test football after the 2007 World Cup in France. White once compared Pienaar to Gregan's former Wallabies halves partner, Stephen Larkham, the Brumbies' current backs coach, which is high praise.
Pienaar, who can play halfback, five-eighth and fullback, is a clever runner with a deft pass and is also an accurate goal-kicker.
The son of former Springboks fullback Gysie Pienaar, he played Super Rugby with the Sharks and made his Springboks debut under White's coaching in 2006 and was a member of South Africa's successful World Cup squad.
He is currently playing for Ulster in the Magners League.
