Former Wallabies Skipper Announces Retirement
December 09, 2010 - 3:45pm
Story by: ARU
Former Wallabies captain George Gregan has called an end to his illustrious career, announcing that this season will be the last for the 1999 World Cup winning halfback.
Gregan, who also appeared for Australia at Under 19 and 21 level, is currently playing for Suntory Sungoliath in the Japanese national competition under former Brumbies and Wallabies mentor Eddie Jones and alongside former Waratahs fullback Peter Hewat.
Gregan retired from international rugby in 2007, following his fourth World Cup appearance for Australia, and signed for French club side Toulon. After only one season in the south of France, Gregan was enticed to Suntory by former mentor Jones who is a Coaching Advisor at the Tokyo-based club.
At 37 years of age, Gregan will retire as the most capped player in the history of Test Rugby after compiling 139 Wallaby caps over an international career that spanned thirteen years.
A major-player throughout the golden-era of Australian Rugby, between 1998-2002, Gregan won a World Cup, Tri Nations, Bledisloe Cup, British Lions series in 2001 and two Super 14 titles with the ACT Brumbies in 2001 and 2004.
