The Rugby World Cup will, for the first time, be broadcast live to the scientists and support workers of two research bases in Antarctica.
The 15-strong winter population at Scott Base - comprising 13 New Zealanders,one Australian and an Irishman - will be able to watch all 48 matches live courtesy of Television New Zealand.
Pool C rivals Australia and Ireland meet at Auckland's Eden Park on September 17.
The tournament will also be broadcast to the US McMurdo Station, the largest Antarctic settlement which is also based on Ross Island.
Mike Mahon, IT administrator for Antarctica NZ, said: "The crew here, and our friends from the nearby US McMurdo Station, are definitely looking forward to cheering on the teams at what promises to be a superb Rugby World Cup."
The 2011 World Cup will be broadcast in more than 200 territories.
